What counts as CPD?

When it comes to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), it’s important to know what activities count and how they contribute to your professional growth. At Counselling Tutor, we want to provide you with the guidance you need. Here’s what you should know:

CPD Certificates: Our CPD certificates are awarded specifically for lecture presentations that are designed with clear aims and objectives. These certificates acknowledge your completion of these lectures and serve as evidence of your professional development.

Recording Time as CPD: While only lecture presentations carry CPD certificates, you can still record the time you spend on other activities as CPD. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) states that any activity that impacts your current or future professional practice can be included.

Examples of CPD Activities: These activities can include a wide range of experiences that contribute to your professional growth. Here are some examples recommended by the BACP:

  • Conferences: Attending or presenting at conferences can provide valuable insights and learning opportunities.
  • E-learning CPD Modules: Engaging in online modules specifically designed for CPD can enhance your knowledge and skills.
  • Formal Education: Participating in formal education, such as lectures, seminars, courses, or workshops, can deepen your understanding of specific topics.
  • In-Service Training: Training programs provided within your workplace can contribute to your professional development.
  • Mentoring: Being mentored by an experienced professional can offer guidance and support in your career.
  • Peer Support Groups: Joining peer support groups allows you to connect with fellow professionals, share experiences, and learn from each other.
  • Organizing Specialist Groups: Taking an active role in organizing groups or events focused on specific areas of counselling can expand your expertise.
  • Reading and Research: Keeping up with books, journals, and articles related to counselling enables you to stay informed about the latest research and practices.
  • TV and Radio Programmes: Engaging with relevant programs can provide insights and perspectives on counselling-related topics.
  • Work Shadowing: Observing and learning from experienced practitioners in their work environment can be a valuable learning experience.
  • Writing: Sharing your knowledge and experiences by writing articles or papers can contribute to the professional community.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and it’s always a good idea to consult with your specific ethical body to confirm which activities they recognise as CPD. The BACP provides a comprehensive guide to CPD, which you can refer to for more information.

We encourage you to make the most of your CPD journey, exploring various activities that align with your professional goals and contribute to your growth as a counselling professional. Together, we can create a community of continuous learners dedicated to making a positive impact in the world.
